November 21 delivery:
  • 2 heads cabbage
  • 3 kohlrabi with greens
  • 1 stalk brussels sprouts
  • 1 butternut squash
  • 1 kale top
Meals:
And for posterity's sake, here's our extended holiday weekend menu:
Meal 1: stoemp, sauteed greens, cranberry sauce (filling from cranberry hand pies), "key lime" pies
Meal 2: butternut and apple galette, green bean casserole, cranberry hand pies (made a half batch of pastry + the whole cranberry recipe)
Meal 3: corn pudding, loaded brussels sprouts salad, roasted potatoes

Nutritional yeast in granola? Not a terrible idea!
Because I did laundry directly after work and then waited around for Shane to stop by with some stuff until past the time it was reasonable to start cooking, the following was my dinner:

- 1 handful mixed nuts (marcona almonds, cashews)
- 1 small bowl grape tomatoes, halved, with kosher salt
- 1 small mango
- about half a cup of black bean and corn salsa, scooped out with
- a handful of snow peas
- 5 kalamata olives
- 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds

Yep. The cleanse: doin' it right.

I will also note that last night's dinner (which used a cleanse recipe) was:
- 1 head cauliflower, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with paprika, then roasted
- 1 red bell pepper, also roasted
- 10 kalamata olives
followed by:
- 1/2 cup chickpeas, roasted with paprika and cayenne

Tomorrow I should be able to just come home and cook, though, which will be good as these half-assed meals need to stop. On the bright side, I have managed to cook breakfast and dinner the last three days, and breakfast today. Miso soup is my friend.

Food-wise

Things I can no longer eat without suffering the consequences:
  • Roasted garlic
  • Broccoli
  • Linguica (some spicy sausages are OK, but this one isn't working out so well)
  • Soda
  • Brown rice (in small amounts it's OK)
  • Overly spicy things
Things I used to not like/eat that I now like/eat:
  • Cauliflower
  • Red meat
  • Greens (esp. chard)
Things that I just don't like, no matter how much I've tried:
  • Salmon
  • Hops
  • Malted things (malts, malt balls, etc)

Day 99 - 10/29/07, originally uploaded by brixton.

Last night SB and I went to this little Chinese restaurant in Falls Church for dinner and had probably the best Chinese food of my entire life. Having grown up in the Midwest, this probably isn't a terribly bold statement.

I don't really care, though, as the leftover fish soup with pickled vegetables is worthy of the Tampopo-esque slurps that I'm inflicting on my cubicle neighbors.

tapas

We checked out Radio Maria's tapas 'lounge' last night while celebrating our launch of Moodle.  The tapas was good - not quite as amazing as the tapas we had in Iowa City, but delicious and relatively affordable.  We had the sampler plate, two pieces of tapas each, a dessert, two glasses of champagne (me), and a beer (SB), for $40-something.  I love Radio for dinner and brunch, and the tapas lounge was a nice and welcome addition to the downtown area.

yum

For dinner tonight I had a vegetarian paella instant meal thing from Fantastic Foods.  It was, well, fantastic, and I'm considering buying their stuff in bulk.  I had the Tuscan Mushroom Risotto last week and loved it.  I have a hard time with pre-fab meals - most of them just don't fill me up, and then I eat something else, and then I've defeated the purpose of eating something good for me and not going-out spendy.  These seem to the be exception to the rule.  I have the Ginger Shiitake with Rice Noodles and am looking forward to eating it soon.

My field (library and information science) is rife with made-up terminology to describe areas of research that are essentially mashups of other areas: bibliometrics, folksonomy, etc.  I tend to be really annoyed by such things, but I think I've found an exception to this rule: snacksonomy.

To be more precise, the site that provides the exception to the rule:  Snacksby.  Snacksby lets you tag your own recipes by ingredient - or search by ingredient for recipes containing the four weird things you have left in your fridge.

I tried to do this a couple of months ago using delicious to tag recipes I wanted to try - I have a loooong list of bookmarked recipes - but didn't get enough entries in to make it worthwhile.  Now I'm wondering if I can port that information over into Snacksby....

Either way, yum.  I'm happy this has come along.
