I swear to you that I am not exaggerating IN THE LEAST when I say that the weather has gone from clear blue skies to torrential downpour and ominous black clouds FIVE TIMES today, often cycling between the two in under 30 minutes.  It was totally lovely out when we left work an hour ago.  It has now been storming for 30 minutes.

In addition to killing everyone's baby gardens - already delayed due to the late cold (lows in the 30s last week) and non-stop rain - this weather quite possibly might kill our spirits.  Mine are certainly already worse for wear.

So last night I was supposed to go to knitting group (sorry [livejournal.com profile] astormorray for flaking out), but instead I went home and took a long nap and made dinner and went to the garden with Shane, all of which very badly needed to happen.  Between weather, other commitments, travel, and laziness, we hadn't done any real work over there in two weeks, and it showed.  While our neighbors' gardens were full of things that should be growing there - ours mostly had a lot of weeds.

In the garden:
  • Early and late yield potatoes - Red Norland, Yukon Gold
  • Yellow onions - can't remember the actual type
  • French breakfast radishes - 3 plantings
  • Dwarf blue curled kale - 2 plantings
  • Carrots - 3 plantings
  • Jewel-toned beets
  • Nasturtiums
  • Sunflowers - thanks, garden neighbor!
  • Yellow summer squash
In the front bed and in pots:
  • Rosemary
  • Greek oregano
  • Lavender
  • Basil
  • 4-5 Sweet 100s, started from seed.
  • Borettana onions - need to be transplanted
  • 2-3 assorted hot peppers - need to be transplanted if they survive
Depending on what's available at the market, I'd still like to plant the following:
  • Tomatoes
  • Bell peppers
  • Hot peppers
  • Cucumbers - I have seeds but not sure if it's too late?
  • More herbs for the front bed - cilantro, mint, sage, more basil
This was our first year starting seeds in the basement under a grow light - it was pretty exciting, but few plants survived when we took them out to harden off.  Of the 18-24 Sweet 100s seedlings, maybe 5 were strong enough to transplant.  None of the 12-18 Brussels sprouts and only maybe 2-3 of the 18-24 chilies were strong enough to survive the rain over the weekend - they were either pummeled flat by the heavy rain or drowned.  I'm discouraged about all of this, but it was the first year, and I'll do some things differently next time.
