I'm - well, not proud, but not ashamed either to say that I have very little music that I listened to in high school, which is directly related to the fact that sometime immediately following my freshman year of high school, I sold off most of my secular CDs because I had Seen The Light and realized that Jesus didn't want me listening to that bad music.

That lasted about a year, and then I discovered The Beatles. I stayed up late one night because Mom had baked brownies, and they were too warm to cover when she went to bed. A Hard Day's Night was on TV, and I was entranced. I taped Help!, and it was kind of all down hill from there.

A few years later, I remember sitting out at the picnic table behind Barnes & Noble and eating my lunch with Cindy and Kevin while they played backgammon. Cindy, who was old enough to be my mom, asked Kevin and I when we started going astray from the really conservative Christian environment in which we had both been raised. We both placed the blame squarely on The Beatles as being our sort of gateway drug into the Real World (not the TV show, capitalization just for emphasis, dudes). Cindy found that interesting as that's basically the argument that had been made when she was our age AGAINST listening to The Beatles.

I actually meant to talk about an entirely different song, but instead, here's a song that was important to me in high school:

The Beatles - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away (right click, save as, pls)

I'm 15, and my parents have just bought a new house and we're about to move out of the neighborhood where I grew up, and where I've just become best friends with the new girl next door. I'm all angsty about this move, and I'm also teaching myself to play the guitar, so I spend a great deal of the summer of 1995 in the empty house, playing about three chords and being miserable. You can see where this is going, so I'll spare myself the embarassment.
